Bookseller and publisher who founded the book store now known as Dymocks.

Dymocks

Bookselling business begun by William Dymock in the 1880s in Pitt Street as Dymock's Book Arcade. He moved to larger premises on King Street and then again in 1890 to George Street, in the southern wing of the Royal Hotel on the eastern side of the road between King and Market Streets. The flagship store remained in the same location after the original George Street store was demolished and replaced by 'The Block', or 'The Dymock's Building' in the 1920s.

Dymocks Building

Office and multi-storey retail arcade building in George Street designed by architect F H B Wilton, on the site occupied in part by Dymocks bookshop since 1890. Formally known as The Block, it was built in Commercial Palazzo style and reflected the retail optimism and less elite bazaar concept of 1920s shopping. The site had earlier been occupied by the Royal Hotel and Theatre Royal.

Southern residential suburb which grew from a logging camp in the 1820s to a closely settled residential area with the advent of electric trams early in the twentieth century. 'Earl' commemorates a former mayor of Canterbury and 'Wood' two brothers who had a poultry and pig farm on Wolli Creek.

Association first established in Brisbane by a group of draper's assistants to discuss the hours worked by shop assistants. The New South Wales branch was active in 1898 and 1899 in proposing a draft Early Closing Act to limit hours to four days closing at 6pm, one day at 10pm and one day at 1pm.
