Dudley's Emporium

Suburban emporium on the corner of Anzac Parade and Maroubra Road which included a small cinema, stores for produce, hardware, groceries, draperies, refreshments, chemist, butchery and residence. It was established to provide services for the growing suburb which had been rapidly developed by Herbert Dudley.

Dudley, Herbert Joseph

Land developer and auctioneer who developed large area of crown land at Maroubra as residential areas and provided community services and facilities to encourage growth. His association dated from family holidays at Long Bay in the 1890s when he realised the potential of the area if it was gradually unlocked with better tram services and roads.

Duke of Edinburgh's Highland Brigade

Scottish volunteer corps formed in 1868 in time for the visit of the Prince Alfred, the Duke of Edinburgh. They wore a uniform of Black Watch tartan. The unit was disbanded in 1878 as numbers had dwindled.

Dulwich High School

Public school built on land from the Seaview Estate, purchased in 1883 and opened in 1885. Extended over the years, it had over 1500 pupils in 1915. In 2002, following a campaign by the community, the heritage building was restored and the school became Dulwich High School of Visual Arts and Design.

Railway station on Wardell Road in Dulwich Hill that opened in 1895 as part of the Belmore Line. Originally named Wardell Road Railway Station, the name was changed on 1 July 1920. The station is now on the Bankstown Line.

Dunkirk Hotel

Three storey Federation hotel building on the corner of Harris Street and Pyrmont Bridge Road in Pyrmont which replaced an older building dating from at least 1876. It was one of 25 hotels which once existed on the peninsula to cater for the workers in the abattoir, quarries and woolstores, the backbones of the local economy. Originally known as the Butchers Arms Hotel, it was renamed in 1940 to commemorate the World War II Battle of Dunkirk in France earlier in 1940.

Ltd, particularly associated with the manufacturer of rubber tyres for the growing automobile industry. The company established a service centre for motorists at 27 Wentworth Avenue in August 1929.

Dunn, John

Eldest of nine children of convicts Michael and Margaret Dunn who joined Ben Halls gang in 1864. In January 1865, he shot dead Constable Samuel Nelson in the bungled robbery of Kimberleys Inn at Collector, near Goulburn. He was hanged at Darlinghurst Gaol aged 19.
