Centrepoint Tower

Reputedly sketched on a paper napkin, the design for the Sydney Tower, also called Sydney Tower, used new engineering solutions to build the tower and to manage the effect of the wind.

Echo Point

Situated in Gundungurra and Darug country, Echo Point emerged as a major tourist destination in the 1920s and today attracts around 1.4 million visitors a year. Combining a 'holiday playground' atmosphere with the sublime, Echo Point is a compelling site for thinking about the many different ways of seeing that have shaped the Blue Mountains landscape: Indigenous, Romantic, commercial and environmental.

Hydro Majestic

The Hydro Majestic hotel snakes for over a kilometre along the escarpment overlooking the Megalong and Kanimbla valleys. The grand vision of wealthy entrepreneur Mark Foy, the Hydro opened as an exclusive luxury hotel renowned for its opulence, fine food and entertainments. Over the decades it has undergone many transformations, updating its decor and amenities to suit changing tastes. After an extended period of decline, a revitalised Hydro reopened in 2014.

Tourism

Shaped by tourism from its earliest days as a town, Sydney has catered to tourists from overseas, other parts of Australia and the New South Wales hinterland, becoming one of the world's favourite travel destinations.

Empress of Australia

Passenger and vehicle ship built for the Sydney to Devonport service of the Australian National Line. It was one of the longest ferry services in the world and operated until 1985 when the ship was sold and converted to a cruise ship in the Mediterranean.

Stump of a blackbutt tree just outside Katoomba that was allegedly carved with the initials of Wentworth, Blaxland and Lawson during the crossing of the Blue Mountains in 1813, but this historical significance is often questioned.

Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre

Convention and exhibition centre at Darling Harbour designed by Philip Cox. The mast and cable construction of the Exhibition Centre reflects its maritime environment. During the 2000 Sydney Olympics the complex was used for wrestling, boxing, judo and fencing events.

Wentworth Hotel, Chifley Square

Distinctive semi-circular brick Post War Minimalist Style hotel building that runs between Bligh and Phillip Streets on the block next door to Qantas House. Designed by American architects, Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, it was built by Qantas as a replacement for the original Wentworth Hotel on Church Hill. It was originally known as Qantas Wentworth and opened on 14 December 1966. It was the largest of five international hotels built in Sydney in the 1960s and the largest brick structure in the southern hemisphere. In 2002 it was rebranded as the Sofitel Wentworth.

Waugh, James William

Scottish publisher, bookseller and stationer in Sydney who wrote and published The Stranger's Guide to Sydney and the Australian Almanac.

Waugh migrated to Australia with his parents and sisters in 1840 to join his brothers David and Robert. The family settled in the Illawarra region. Waugh planned to become a publisher as his father had been in Edinburgh, and moved to Sydney where he worked for bookseller William Piddington before setting up on his own in November 1851, initially at 14 Hunter Street. He published, among other things, a volume of Henry Parkes' poetry, religious, science and art magazines, almanacs and tourist guides as well as a commercial directory to Sydney. He married Mary Lee Stobo in 1856. In late 1862, Waugh closed the business and moved to Bowenfels with his growing family. Waugh was insolvent by 1866 and the family moved to Kiama where they ran the fashionable boarding house Waratah House on Teralong Street. Waugh was also offering his services as a bookkeeper and Latin tutor, and was involved in the Kiama School of Arts. He died at home from 'pulmonary consumption', or tubercolosis, at the age of 48.

Waterway to the west of the city once surrounded by wharves, goods yards, woolstores and factories which contributed enormously to the city's economic wealth. The former rail lines and goods yards were transformed from commercial port to a recreational and pedestrian precinct in the 1980s.

Echo Point

Point south of Katoomba which juts into the Kedumba Valley. The lookout offers spectacular views of the valley the the Three Sisters.
