Turner Hall

Highly decorative two storey heritage building with Australian fauna and flora decoration, pressed metal ceilings and marble wall panels located on Mary Ann Street within the historic precinct of Ultimo College. The building, erected in 1892, was used for various purposes during the twentieth century including an auditorium with a seating capacity of about 1,000. Following renovations in 1990 it now has a seating capacity of 450. It is named for J W Turner the Superintendent of Technical Education 1906-13.

Turner, Thomas

Stonemason and builder who was transported for life in 1815. He is believed to have conceived the idea of robbing the Bank of Australia and organising the group who carried out the robbery, though his participation was never proved. He worked with Francis Greenway as a stonemason on St James Church and the Government House stables and received a pardon in 1842.

House built in 1804 by surgeon John Harris on his estate at Ultimo, and extended in 1814 by the convict architect Francis Greenway. It was Greenway's first colonial commission.

The Ultimo Power House on the corner of Harris and William Henry Streets was built in 1898 'in the Italian Renaissance style of architecture' to supply Sydney's new electric tram system, and opened in 1899, producing choking clouds of coal dust over Ultimo. After the trams stopped in 1961, the building became redundant. In 1988 it was modified to house the Technological Museum and reopened as the Powerhouse Museum.

Wooden board featuring three panels which include the names of 36 men who enlisted in the AIF during World War I. Initiated by Reverend John Muir in 1916 it originally listed 19 names and was placed in the Ultimo Presbyterian Church where it stayed until the church fell into disuse. The board was installed in the entrance to the Ultimo Community Centre in March 2015.

Ultimo Quarries

Sandstone quarries which have enriched the cultural heritage of the city and built many of Sydney's public buildings, scarring the western side Ultimo from the 1850s. Named Heaven, Hell and Purgatory by Scottish workmen, each quarry produced stone with distinctive qualities. As the Saunders family of quarry masters abandoned the quarries they were given new uses as the sites of the Ultimo Public School and numerous wool stores.
