Horton, Allan Roy

Allan Horton's career spanned both archives and librarianship. He joined the then Public Library of New South Wales in 1944 and was appointed Archives Officer in 1953. He moved to the University of New South Wales as Associate Librarian in 1960. He succeeded John Metcalfe as University Librarian in 1965 and retired in 1988. Active in his profession he held various offices in the Library Association of Australia and in the Australian Advisory Council on Bibliographical Services. In 1976 he served as Chairman of the federal government's Committee of Inquiry into Public Libraries. The Library Association of Australia awarded him a Fellowship in 1969 and the HCL Anderson Award in 1979. In 1989 the University of New South Wales conferred an honorary D.Litt for his services to the University and to his profession.

Horton, Warren

Warren Horton was a respected senior member of the library profession in Australia. He began his career in the Public Library of New South Wales in 1957 and served as Deputy State Librarian 1975-1981. He served as State Librarian of Victoria 1981-1985 and as Director-General of the National Library of Austraia 1985-1999. The Australian Library and Information Association awarded him a Fellowship in 1985 and the HCL Anderson Award in 1992. He was made a Member of the Order of Australia for services to librarianship in 1992, and was awarded honorary doctorates by LaTrobe University and the University of Canberra.

Howard, Robert Rice

Robert 'Nosey Bob' Howard was the New South Wales public hangman from 1876 until his retirement in 1904. He acted as assistant executioner several times prior to his official permanent appointment. Howard had been a successful hansom cab driver who was popular with his wealthy Darling Harbour clientele (it was rumoured that he had been the preferred cab driver for Prince Alfred during his visit to Sydney in 1868), but after being kicked in the head by one of his horses and losing his nose, his disfigured appearance deterred his former patrons and his business failed. He moved from Paddington with his family to Bondi Beach in 1888 and lived there until his death in 1906.
