Dillon, John (Cutts)

Jockey who rode 'Archer', the winner of the first Melbourne Cup in 1861. Johnny Cutts, as he became known, was one of the best known and most respected jockeys in New South Wales and trained at the stable of William Cutts. After his retirement, he and his wife Mary managed the Half Way Hotel on Sydney Road near Randwick Racecourse. Dillon died leaving his widow and children destitute and a subscription was raised for the benefit of his family.

Dingle, James

Shoemaker, transported for seven years in 1815 and freed by servitude in 1826. Found guilty of participating in the 1828 robbery of the Bank of Australia and sentenced to life on Norfolk Island. Escaped from there in a boat in 1833 and was presumed drowned.

Dolan, Sydney Robert

Bank messenger who enlisted as a private in the 7th Field Ambulance and disembarked at Plymouth, England in November 1916 before being sent to Etaples, France. He was admitted to hospital in April 1917 for 'defective vision'. He was reprimanded for absence without leave in August 1917 and February 1918. In February 1919, he was reprimanded for disobedience while on active service, forfeiting 29 days' pay and receiving 28 days labouring duties.

Shearer who enlisted as a private in the 4th Reinforcement, 17th Battalion. Between April 1916 and June 1917 he was reprimanded several times for absence without leave, behaving 'in an insolent manner' and also 'hesitating to obey an order'. Doling was awarded a Military Medal for 'unselfish devotion to duty' during the Battle of Menin Road and in August 1918, he was admitted to hospital for a severe gun shot wound to his right thigh. After marrying in England, he returned to Australia.

Donald, James Shand

Ironmoulder who enlisted in the 11th Reinforcement, 19th Battalion. He was promoted to Extra Depot Corporal in England, and then Acting Corporal in September 1916 in Etaples, France, before reverting to private. In November 1916 he was hospitalised in England with trench foot syndrome. He was sent back to Etaples and was admitted to hospital again in May 1918 with influenza and transferred to England before being sent back to Australia suffering from synovitis in his left knee.
