Botanist and explorer who collected plant samples of northern and western Australia on four voyages with Phillip Parker King, and was responsible for extensive botanical exploration around Bathurst and the Liverpool Plains. He was briefly Colonial Botanist under Governor Gipps.

Leader of the Irish convicts in the rebellion at Castle Hill. A stonemason and publican in his native Ireland who attempted to reorganise the United Irish network, he was transported for sedition and remained a rebel til his death.

Cunningham, Syd 'Doc'

Syd 'Doc' Cunningham was an Aboriginal man of the Yuin people who was known to many as Black Santa. He was a welfare worker with the Western Districts Foundation for Aboriginal Affairs in St Marys and served with the Australian armed forces in World War II. In the 1960s he began making trips to remote areas of western New South Wales with presents for Aboriginal children. After his retirement in 1992, Cunningham continued to raise funds for the Christmas presents he would take to Aboriginal children, sitting outside a supermarket on King Street, Newtown with a table, a chair and a bucket. He was awarded an Order of Australia Medal in 1989. 

After his death in 1999, a plaque in his honour was erected on the spot on King Street where he had sat.

Cuthill, Alexander

Doctor who was the principal benefactor of the Randwick Asylum for Destitute Children. He was murdered on the Cooks River Road by a disturbed man named James Gray in 1854. In 1860 a bridge was built at the bottom of Beach Street in Coogee and named after Cuthill in honour of his role in formally establishing the asylum with his generous bequest. Cuthill Street, also named after him, borders High Cross Park.

Dalley, Catherine

Irish housemaid from Kinsale in County Cork who was tried for stealing sheets and sentenced to seven years transportation, arriving in Sydney in 1825 with her daughter. John Dalley applied for a ticket of leave to marry her which was initially rejected and so the couple were only able to marry once Catherine was granted her freedom. The couple moved to Sydney and her husband ran a successful store on George Street. The couple had seven children together, however, four of them died before they reached adulthood.

Daughter of the wealthy wine merchant William Long who later married the politician and lawyer, William Bede Dalley. She died at their residence, Clairvaux House, of typhoid fever leaving six young children.
