A Short History of the Black and White Artists' Club

The Society of Australian Black and White Artists was the first association of newspaper artists in the world. From 1924 to 1946, it hosted over 20 Black and White Artists' balls around Sydney, raising money and causing public scandal. The Black and White Artists' Club or the Australian Cartoonists' Association (as it is now known) has around 300 members

Australian Arts Club

Associated with Sydney art identity Sydney Ure Smith, the Australian Arts Club sought to provide a common meeting ground for artists, for discussion and study.

Boomalli Aboriginal Artists' Cooperative

Formed after a backlash against contemporary Aboriginal art, Boomalli provided Indigenous artists with a space free from external definitions of Aboriginality.

Fowles, Joseph

Farmer, businessman, racing enthusiast, Joseph Fowles was also a successful artist, who left a visual record of Sydney in 1848 that remains invaluable to historians.

George Caleb Hedgeland

George Caleb Hedgeland was a colonist who successfully turned his hand to several diﬀerent professions during his lifetime. A surveyor who undertook alignment surveyors of streets across Sydney in the late nineteenth cenutry, he had also been a pastoralist, artist and stained glass artist.

Henry, Lucien

Freed from incarceration in New Caledonia for his revolutionary activities in the Paris Commune, Lucian Henry built a new life in Sydney as an artist, teacher and advocate for native Australian motifs in the decorative arts.

Lindsay, Lionel

One of the large Lindsay family of artists and writers, Lionel Lindsay settled in Sydney from 1903, and became a well known art writer as well as a noted watercolourist and printmaker.

Margaret Flockton at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney

Margaret Flockton made an enormous contribution to early Australian botanical illustration and taxonomy in her role as the first botanical illustrator at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney. Flockton is finally being given the lasting credit due to her, joining the ranks of other acclaimed, first illustrators such as Marianne of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew

Museum of Contemporary Art

Housed in an Art Deco building constructed for the Maritime Services Board in the 1940s, the Museum of Contemporary Art is based on the Power collection of contemporary art, gathered by John Power, and maintained at the University of Sydney until premises could be found for it.

National Art School

The National Art School has been at the centre of Sydney's art scene for almost a century, and has nurtured the talents of generations of artists who have studied and worked in studios within the walls of the old Darlinghurst Gaol.

Painting Old Sydney

Just over a century ago, a unique collection of paintings opened a window to the urban life of the Rocks and Millers Point before their major transformation. No part of Sydney had been depicted so intensively. The Old Sydney Exhibition succeeded in bringing the loss of Old Sydney to the attention of the public, and so planted the seeds of the heritage conservation movement.

The Biennale of Sydney

Spanning multiple venues from the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Cockatoo Island and the Museum of Contemporary Art, The Biennale of Sydney embraces the city as physical space and cultural landscape. As sites to be celebrated, explored and culturally excavated, the exhibitions have become as much a celebration of how visitors experience Sydney as how audiences experience art.

The Life and Death of Joe Lynch

Had it not been for Kenneth Slessor's poem 'Five Bells', the death of Joe Lynch might have been just another drowning in Port Jackson, not the first, and regrettably not the last. Slessor's poem inspired John Olsen's 1963 painting, Five Bells, on permanent display at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, and his 1973 mural, Salute to Five Bells, installed in the northern foyer of the main concert hall at the Sydney Opera House. In the Royal Botanic Gardens near the Opera House gate, Guy Lynch's Satyr, modelled on Joe, looks out to sea to where his brother drowned and where the Manly Ferry passes on its daily route.

The Museum of Contemporary Art Australia

Since opening in the old Maritime Services Board building at Sydney Cove in 1991, the Museum of Contemporary Art has taken its place among other Sydney's icons. Located on one of Sydney's, and indeed Australia's, most historically laden sites, the MCA brought contemporary art to the city at a moment when Sydney saw that the living dreams of present-day artists were part of its busy life.

Temporary public artwork created by American artist Jeff Koons that was exhibited in the forecourt of the Museum of Contemporary Art at Circular Quay from 12 December 1995 until 17 March 1996. A 12.4 metre high structure in the shape of a terrier that was then filled with soil and flowering plants, it was the tenth work supported by Kaldor Public Art Projects.

Sydney Punch

Illustrated satirical periodical with various publishers from 1864 until 1888. Modelled on the English Punch magazine, Sydney Punch was established in 1864 by Edgar Ray, one of the founders of the older Melbourne Punch.

Vase made Sevres Imperial Manufactory in 1869 which was one of a pair sent by France to be exhibited in the 1879 Sydney International Exhibition with many other decorative items to demonstrate France's rich cultural heritage. It was presented afterward by the Commissary-General A Mathieu "on behalf of the French Republic, to the City Corporation of Sydney, C J Roberts, Mayor 1879" in gratitude for the exhibition and with "the full appreciation my countrymen have of the energy and freedom of the inhabitants of Australia, freedom extended to all, whatever may be their origin."

Waratah: Australian Legend

Book by Henry Lucien published in Paris in 1891, that was used as a teaching aid for the decorative arts throughout New South Wales.

Wrapped Coast – One Million Square Feet

Artwork created in 1969 by artists Jeanne Claude and Christo, who wrapped a 2.5km portion of the coast of Little Bay in fabric and rope. The largest artwork every made, it was the first of their large scale environmental public artworks and the first work supported by Kaldor Public Art Projects.

Performing arts company that was founded in 1964 in response to the need for more Australian work in the performing arts. The company focuses on work with experimental and emerging artists. PACT originally stood for Producers Authors Composers and Talent but became the PACT (Producers Artists Curators Technicians) Centre for Emerging Arts. The organisation was originally based in the old Corn Exchange building on Sussex Street in the city before moving in January 1988 to to the PACT Theatre, a converted warehouse at 107 Railway Parade, Erskineville.

He helped found the Australian National University and helped secure funding for the Australian film industry. He was also a supporter of the rights of Australia's Indigenous people.

He was the model for his brother Guy (Frank) Lynch's sculpture 'The Satyr', a bronze casting of which is in the Royal Botanic Gardens in his memory. He was also the model for his brother's statue of a New Zealand digger for the World War I memorial in Devonport, New Zealand, that is known colloquially as 'the untidy soldier'.

The front of the Charlotte Medal 1788

The Charlotte medal, recognised as being Australia's earliest colonial art work, is believed to have been engraved by Thomas Barrett, a convict thief and forger, on board the First Fleet convict transport Charlotte whilst the ship was anchored in Botany Bay between 20 and 26 January 1788. It was commissioned by the First Fleet's Principle Surgeon John White, who was also the surgeon onboard Charlotte during the voyage. It is now held in the collections of the Australian National Maritime Museum.

WALTER: In the main street there used to be a chap by the name of Wilson, he was a saddler, and he had one son, I think his name was Eric. He was a pretty good artist. He painted one very good one, and it hung for years in the School of Arts, of Old Bill Ashe and John Grace. They were, I'm not sure, it was that long ago now, whether it was a game of draughts or a game of chess they were playing, and Eric painted this. I know it was shifted, I don't know where it went, and I didn't find out until round about 1956 or 58, could've been a bit later again.

I was working at a place and got to know a young fella in there. He was one of the young Ashe's, Bill's son. I said to him one day, I said 'Was Bill Ashe who used to live in Liverpool your father?' He said 'Yes' I said 'You used to live over near the Clinch's Pond?' He said 'Yes, at the orchard, we had an orchard there'. He said to me, he says 'Did you ever see a painting of Dad's father, my grandfather?' 'Yes', I said, 'It used to hang in the School of Arts'. He said 'That's right',' but, he said 'It don't hang there anymore.' I said '1 knew it went'. He said 'Do you know where it is?' He said 'It's in the National Art Gallery in Canberra'.
