Christmas in Martin Place

The Christmas tree in Martin Place, a fixture of Sydney's festive season, is a relatively recent addition to the landscape of the city, dating from 1971 when Martin Place was first converted into a pedestrian space. It is, however, a continuation of older traditions in the city.

Ku-ring-gai Tree Lovers' Civic League

Founded by Annie Forsyth Wyatt in the 1930s, the Tree Lovers' Civic League grew out of concern at the destruction of the natural environment.

Oranges

Oranges arrived in Sydney with the First Fleet and have been grown in Sydney ever since.

St Ives Boundary Tree

A big tree in the 1880s when it was noted in a census of plants, the Boundary Tree still stands at Mona Vale Road, St Ives.

Temporary public artwork created by American artist Jeff Koons that was exhibited in the forecourt of the Museum of Contemporary Art at Circular Quay from 12 December 1995 until 17 March 1996. A 12.4 metre high structure in the shape of a terrier that was then filled with soil and flowering plants, it was the tenth work supported by Kaldor Public Art Projects.

River mangrove with rounded leaves and aerial roots, which is usually found with the grey mangrove, Avicennia marina, but extends further upstream and inland.

Blue Gum Forest

Forested area of Grose Gorge at the junction of Govetts Creek. Historically and naturally significant, the area was saved from the axe by bushwalkers in the 1930s.

Spotted gum with straight powdery bark trunk which can grow to 45 metres.

A large tree, commonly known as blackbutt, it is identified by the stocking of rough bark, to about halfway up the trunk, above this is white smooth bark.

Sydney blue gum is a large flowering hardwood tree which can grow to 63 metres high.

Tree known as the Moreton Bay Fig or Australian banyan that is a native of most of the eastern coast of Australia.

Apple cultivar which originated at Eastwood after it was propogated from a chance seedling by Maria Ann Smith in 1868.

Tall palm tree that grows along the east coast of Australia. The edible tip of the tree was known as a 'cabbage' (although eating it kills the tree). The fibrous leaves were were used by Aboriginal people in a wide variety of ways, and by European settlers to make the eponymous hats.

Pittosporum undulatum

Tree with wavy leaf edges, white blooms and woody orange fruits that grows to 15m.

St Ives Boundary Tree

Red gum which marks the boundaries of the Parishes of Manly Cove, Broken Bay and Gordon. It is situated on the east side of Mona Vale Road near Richmond Avenue.

Rare and ancient coniferous tree discovered in 1994 in a temperate rainforest wilderness within Wollemi National Park. Often referred to as the 'living fossil'.

Acclimatisation Society of New South Wales

Society established to procure, introduce and acclimatise exotic species of flora and fauna to a perceived alien landscape. Whilst this was a two way process, for example black swans to England, red deer and even boa constrictor were imported to Australia to augment the rabbits, goat and pigs that had come with the First Fleet.

STANLEY: In the spring all the fruit would be in blossom and it was absolutely beautiful. The green growth of grapes which were only leaves at that stage, you could go up in a plane and look down on these patches of blossom, just like you can the tulips in Holland. You can look down on six acres of tulips or you can look down on six acres of peach trees in blossom or plums or whatever. It was a very pretty place and you know there was no pollution. The river was nice and clean in those days and you could do a fair amount of fishing. We used to get crabs, and general varieties of fish that were in the river at that stage, you wouldn't get much after you'd had a flood. But when the flood had subsided and gone down again the fish would come back. Somehow there was always a place where you could get a feed; you could get a feed of fish, you could go and shoot a rabbit. You were in this little village all on its own, there was no commerce or anything, no shops or whatever. But you know you could go for a walk right round the whole works. You knew everybody that was there.

Mr Stanley Everett and Mrs Amy Everett, interviewed in 1986 for the 'Looking Back at Liverpool: An Oral History of the Liverpool Region 1900 to 1960' project, remember wine growers in their neighbourhood in Chipping Norton in the early twentieth century.

INTERVIEWER: Did you have much to do with your neighbours at Chipping Norton?

STANLEY: Well, they were all in and out of one another's houses like relations, you know. Didn't make much difference did it?

AMY: Yes, I think everybody knew everybody there.

STANLEY: You know you could wander down to Alec Findley's of a night and imbibe some of the local product, and have a yarn.

AMY: Haerses had a place sort of at the back of where Don lived, they used to make wine, on Riverside Road.

STANLEY: They used to make their own wine too. Ron Pearson's father used to make his own wine, that was Ern Pearson. Alec Findley, that was Reg Findley's father, he used to make his own wine, he used to have a beautiful wine down there. And you could buy a quart for two bob [two shillings], a bit different to what you pay for it today. You'd go down there and you'd try all the various varieties and so forth, and say 'Righto, I'll have a quart of that one and a quart of that one', then you'd go home, [you got the wine] for four shillings you see. But it was a very friendly place.
