Commemorative plaque that was installed on the site of the outbreak of the Plague as part of the Sydney Green Plaques project in the 1980s. The text on the plaque read: In 1900 bubonic plague broke out in Sydney. Arthur Payne, a lorry driver at the wharves who lived in a house near this site, was the first person to contract the disease. During cleansing operations much dilapidated housing in this part of The Rocks was demolished.
