Ashby Research Service

The Ashby Research Service was Australia’s first independent market research firm, operating in Sydney from 1936 to 1974. Established by Sylvia Ashby and principally located in Bridge Street, the Ashby Research Service was best known for its use of Consumer Panels, a large, nation-wide network of consumers who provided regular reports on their consumption patterns and preferences. In addition to conducting at least 3573 pieces of market research for a diverse range of local, national, and international clients, the Ashby Research Service helped legitimise market research as a necessary business expense

Shirley Beiger

Shirley Beiger was a fashion model who shot and killed her lover, Arthur Griffith, outside Chequers Nightclub in 1954. She was tried for murder and acquitted. Her trial gained significant national media attention at the time.

Sydney’s Oldest Unsolved Murders

With colonisation came numerous acts of violence inflicted upon the First Nations people, including murder. It was several years, however, before murders were committed in Sydney by the colonists upon each other. Identifying Australia’s oldest case of unsolved murder in this context is not necessarily a straightforward task.

The Life and Death of Joe Lynch

Had it not been for Kenneth Slessor's poem 'Five Bells', the death of Joe Lynch might have been just another drowning in Port Jackson, not the first, and regrettably not the last. Slessor's poem inspired John Olsen's 1963 painting, Five Bells, on permanent display at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, and his 1973 mural, Salute to Five Bells, installed in the northern foyer of the main concert hall at the Sydney Opera House. In the Royal Botanic Gardens near the Opera House gate, Guy Lynch's Satyr, modelled on Joe, looks out to sea to where his brother drowned and where the Manly Ferry passes on its daily route.

Mrs Jessie La Trobe, who was born in 1910, was interviewed in 1986 for the 'Looking Back at Liverpool: An Oral History of the Liverpool Region 1900 to 1960.' Her family owned a news agency in Liverpool and here she describes delivering newspapers to local military camps during the World War II.

Chinese and English language newspaper that became the official organ of the Chinese Nationalist Party. First published in Melbourne in 1902 as an independent paper, it became the official paper of the party in 1919. Between 1922 and 1949 it was printed in the KuoMinTang building on Ultimo Road, Haymarket.

First newspaper published in Sydney, from 5 March 1803 until 20 October 1842.

Originally printed in a lean-to shed at the back of Government House, the newspaper moved to different premises in Macquarie Place in 1808 and then to a building on lower George Street in December 1810. In 1824 the printery moved again to a larger two storey building further south on George Street on the corner of Charlotte Place.

Sydney Punch

Illustrated satirical periodical with various publishers from 1864 until 1888. Modelled on the English Punch magazine, Sydney Punch was established in 1864 by Edgar Ray, one of the founders of the older Melbourne Punch.

64-66 Pitt Street, Sydney

Curved building on the corner of Pitt, Hunter and O'Connell Streets in the city that was built by the Fairfax family to house the offices of their newspapers, the Sydney Morning Herald and Sydney Mail, in the 1920s, on the site of the former Sydney Morning Herald building. Designed by Manson & Pickering, it was built by Stuart Bros in three stages. The newspaper moved to a new building at Broadway in 1954 and this building was sold to the Bank of New South Wales (later Westpac), when it was known as Wales House. Since the bank sold the property, it has been adapted and used as an office building and a hotel.

Newspaper office for the Sydney Morning Herald that stood on the corner of Pitt, Hunter and O'Connell Streets from 1856 until it was demolished in 1926 to be replaced by a new, larger building on the same site.

The keystone representing early English printer John Caxton that was used in the arch of the entrance of the original building was removed and reused in the new building.

Lynch, Joe

Cartoonist and black & white artist for Smith's Weekly and Melbourne Punch, whose death in Sydney Harbour in 1927 at the age of 29 inspired Kenneth Slessor's poem 'Five Bells'. He was the model for his brother Guy (Frank) Lynch's sculpture 'The Satyr', a bronze casting of which is in the Royal Botanic Gardens in his memory. He was also the model for his brother's statue of a New Zealand digger for the World War I memorial in Devonport, New Zealand, that is known colloquially as 'the untidy soldier'.

Attractive 19 year old model Shirley Beiger, of Redfern NSW, proudly holds three prize wire-haired terrier pups for which offers up to 84 pounds have been refused. Bred from champion parents in England, the pups had been in Australia only a few weeks when this picture was taken. Mr Tom Powell, owner of Grendon Kennels, Sydney, who imported the pups from England, believes they are the only prize pups of their type in Australia, says they are 'not for sale at any price'.

Mrs Jessie La Trobe, who was born in 1910, was interviewed in 1986 for the 'Looking Back at Liverpool: An Oral History of the Liverpool Region 1900 to 1960.' Her family owned a newsagency in Liverpool and here she describes delivering newspapers to local military camps during World War II.

Transcript

JESSIE: We had all the camps to do and down there, where all the houses are now on the left hand side, near Warwick Farm Station, before you cross the bridge, that was a big army camp. It was the British navy that really had it and they called it the 'Golden Hind' and they treated it like a ship. When they went in the gate they went 'onboard', when they came out they came 'ashore'. Then we had the Americans in the centre of Warwick Farm racecourse so we had all that to do, and all the extra people who were about. We had nothing to do with Moorebank and Ingleburn as far as papers went but there were a lot about, a lot of people in the street. I still have my pass to go aboard the Golden Hind. They gave me a pass because we used to have to take papers in to the boys, the paperboys. I used to have to pick the papers up at the railway station, Warwick Farm railway, and take them and deliver them into the camps to the boys in different parts of the camps because they were big camps, and take them down, and then the boys would ride their bikes back here and check their money in.
