Glebe Fire Brigade

The Glebe Fire Brigade began with volunteers in 1875 and became a permanent, professional brigade in 1911. Voluntarism was revived during World War II with the advent of the Women's Fire Auxiliary. Now part of the professional New South Wales Fire Brigade, the St Johns Road Fire Station still serves its community.

Marrickville Fire Station

Three-storey fire station built in the Federation Free Classical style on Marrickville Road. It cost 6,500 pounds to build and was one of the last fire stations designed for use by horse-drawn steam appliances. It included a motor turbine room, watch room, office, men's room, store rooms, billiard room, stables and fodder room. The separate building which was used to store petrol included Wunderlich ceilings and the buildings were fitted with 'electric light and gas'.

Old Fire Station Glebe

Fire station constructed for the local volunteer brigade. When vacated in 1908 it became factory and is now a community centre.

Pyrmont Fire Station

Federation style, three-storey, red brick and sandstone fire station on Pyrmont Street, Pyrmont. It is a rare, intact example of the fire stations built in the metropolitan area during the first two decades of the operation of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade. Only Darlinghurst and Headquarters (on Castlereagh Street) are comparable. In 1945, it was one of the 23 stations closed during a cut back and it was used as a Board workshop. Restoration work amounting to $2.7 million commenced in September 2014.

Stanmore Fire Station

Originally Marrickville Fire Station, the building is located on Stanmore Road in Petersham and was the first Fire Station built for the Metropolitan Fire Brigade. Built by Messrs Millit Brothers for 2,300 pounds, the building initially contained 17 rooms and was fitted with 'modern' appliances including electrical apparatus and telephones. Subsequent extensions to the building and its staffing made the station the second largest in New South Wales. Anniversary celebrations in 1986 marked 100 years of continual occupation of the station. It was closed in 1991 and sold to the Mastertouch Piano Roll Compnay in 2000 who remained there until 2005.

Insurance Companies Fire Brigade

Umbrella organisation of fire brigades formed by insurance companies from the 1830s to protect buildings they insured. The buildings were distinguished by metal plates. They competed with volunteer brigades until legislation in 1883 forced amalgamation.

Umbrella organisation that attempted to bring about amalgamation of commercial and voluntary brigades and their equipment. It was treated with distrust in many quarters and many voluntary brigades chose to remain independent.
